THE THUNDERBIRD

Spring 2002

Winter 2002 Camporee

T

he Texoma Valley District Camporee that took place during the weekend of March 1-3 was a great success although it sleeted and snowed throughout the campout. Chapter member Robert C. ran the event. He did a great job, and it shows because the troops left with smiles on their faces despite a wind-chill of negative 4. The events in which the troops participated in included Flag History, where campers learned about the history of our nation's flag, Tent Pitching, where participants raced against other troops to raise a wall tent the fastest, and Archery. The troops competed against each other to claim the coveted Golden Axe. The winner of the acclaimed award was Troop 15, which came away with 8 awards. The campers woke up Saturday morning to what seemed like 100-mph winds and sheets of sleet and snow. Cooking in that weather was exciting when everything was frozen together. During the afternoon, scouts took part in the fun events. Lunch was served in calmer weather than during breakfast.

It was also a time to relax and to warm up. After many hours of events, it was time to get ready for the potluck dinner. The patrols cooked excellent dinners such as chicken breasts, casseroles, and pasta.  Many of the troops left following the hearty meal due to the prediction of temperatures in the negatives.  I think this Camporee will be one to remember!       Joseph N., Participant

The Camporee was a great success thanks to Robert and Erica C. and Staff.  Saturday morning we all woke up to a winter wonder land.  The weather did not cause any cancellations except for the Brotherhood.  Many activities were held such as, Orienteering, Iwo Jima Flag Raising, Scavenger hunt, Silent Signals, Archery, Tent Pitching, and Flag History.  Scouts had a great time competing in the events; fun was had by one and all.  Congratulations to Troop XV who brought home the Golden Ax Award.  Later that night we had a Pot Luck dinner that fed us all and quenched our taste buds.  Thank you for all the great food.  While we ate, the awards were passed out to all the winning patrols.  After dinner we cleared the Dining hall and prepared for a Flag Retirement.  Afterward we had a Tap Out
ceremony and called out six candidates.
