Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week 2008 With the Governor's declaration of February 24 - March 1 as Severe Weather Awareness Week, this is a great time to spread the word about severe weather preparedness (see Gary Woodall's message below). Many of you are well-trained observers and have accumulated a great deal of knowledge and experience. I encourage you to take every opportunity to talk to others about purchasing a NOAA weather alert radio for their home and to have a shelter plan for their home and office. Many folks, especially new arrivals from other parts of the country, just don't give severe weather hazards much thought. Another way that you can make a difference is through participation in a data reporting network like CoCoRaHS. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network, collects precipitation data from volunteer observers and makes it available to all kinds of users including the National Weather Service and local government agencies. In addition, CoCoRaHs may give us an opportunity to participate in a large hail project this year. Stay tuned. If the project happens, they will need hundreds of observers with hail pads in the Dallas -Ft. Worth area. If you would like to learn more about CoCoRaHS, go to: http://cocorahs.org/ I look forward to working with all of you this year. 73, Ted - KD5JEO |
