Where is Gunter?

The first question most people ask is, "Where is Gunter?" Gunter is a
small town in North Texas. Gunter is located about 40-50 miles due
north of Dallas, Texas. You can click on the map to the right to view a
larger version. When we say "small town", we mean SMALL. Gunter's
population is less than 1,000! For being such a small town, Gunter's
school district has a lot to brag about!
Gunter ISD

Gunter ISD has a well deserved reputation for academic excellence.
Students at all grade levels tested have consistently scored well above
both state and group norms. Gunter High School and Elementary School received
exemplary accountability status from the State for the 1994-95 school year.
The Junior High was honored with the Recognition status.
- Academics
- The district places a high emphasis upon academic programs. Gunter High
School competes in many academic events. GHS students compete in Literary
UIL at the district, regional, and state levels. Theses competitions include
contests in mathematics, science, journalism, literary criticism, poetry
and prose, spelling, debate, computer science, current events, and one-act
play. Highly motivated students get the opportunity to display their academic
knowledge in a county-wide QUIZ BOWL. Honors and Advanced Placement courses
afford students with the proficiency to excel on college entry exams such
as the SAT, ACT and Advanced Placement exams. Engineering, science and
technology students exhibit their robotics skills in the regional North
Texas BEST and state Texas BEST competitions sponsored by Texas Instruments.
This years Texas BEST team from Gunter consists of 22 junior high and high
school students who each won $2000 scholarships to Texas A&M University
and sponsorship to US FIRST, a national robotics competition in Orlando,
Florida.
- Athletics
- During recent years, Gunter has produced 47 individual state qualifiers
and three state champions. The athletic teams have produced numerous district
championships, post-district championships in addition to a state semi-finalist,
a state finalist, and a 1994 state baseball championship. The girl's basketball
team was a State semi-finalist in 1995.
- Extracurricular
- The local 4-H, FFA, and FHA chapters fare very well at the county show
and have more entries in many areas than the surrounding larger districts.
The booster clubs that support these extraurricular endeavors contribute
over $15,000 per year to the programs.
- Campuses
- The district consists of three campuses. Gunter Elementary is located
in the city of Gunter and houses grades K-6. Gunter High School and Junior High are located a mile north of Gunter on Highway 289 and includes grades 7-12. Both buildings are well maintained and well equipped with up-to-date computer labs, local area networks, Internet connections, satellite feeds,
and instructional television capabilities. Plans are in progress for a
new middle school campus for Fall 1996.
